KISSIMMEE, Fla. — A 56-year-old patient who had just walked out of a Kissimmee hospital after being discharged was killed in a hit-and-run crash early Tuesday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

  • Man had just walked out of Kissimmee AdventHealth
  • Troopers: He was struck by van, thrown into opposite lanes
  • Patient then run over by vehicle that kept going, FHP says

Albert Herbert of Orlando had just been discharged from Kissimmee AdventHealth at about 12:15 a.m. and was using a walker when troopers say he walked into the southbound lanes and "into the direct path" of a 2014 Chrysler van driven by 80-year-old Samuel Martinez of Kissimmee.

The van was going southbound on Orange Blossom Trail at Hilda Street at the time, the FHP said.

The patient was thrown into the northbound lanes of Orange Blossom Trail. That's when an unidentified vehicle ran over the man and kept going northbound without stopping, troopers say.

Martinez was wearing a seat belt, was not under the influence and was not injured, they said.

The crash remains under investigation, and troopers are still working to identify a suspect vehicle. Anyone with information is asked to call the Crimeline at 1-800-423-8477.
