NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — The Volusia County Sheriff's Office is mourning the loss of Senior Deputy Frank Scofield, 58, who was hit and killed by a vehicle while he was riding his bicycle in New Smyrna Beach Sunday morning.

The crash occurred around 7:40 a.m. at the intersection of Tomoka Farms Road and Pioneer Trail.
Witnesses said the 75-year-old driver of a vehicle who was with his daughter failed to stop at the intersection. He subsequently hit Scofield on his bicycle, according to the Florida Highway Patrol who is handling the investigation.
"Today, we lost one of the best," the Sheriff's Office tweeted.
Sheriff Mike Chitwood spoke about Scofield in a Sunday afternoon news conference, saying the senior deputy, who spent over two decades working for the Sheriff's Office, was training to bike in a 9/11 memorial ride.
"He was killed doing something he loved," Chitwood said about Scofield, who was a U.S. Navy veteran.
Chitwood explained that Scofield was ultimately struck from behind and suffered a "massive head injury." He said he was pronounced dead at Halifax Hospital at 10:30 a.m.
Scofield was also a member of the Volusia County Sheriff's Office's Marine Unit and SWAT team.
According to the FHP report, charges are pending against the 75-year-old male driver.
