ORLANDO, Fla. — Orlando Police are still searching for a suspect in a quadruple shooting overnight that killed an 18-year-old Ocoee High School football star and also left three other people injured.

  • 1 dead, 3 hurt in Orlando shooting
  • Shooting happened Saturday at 11 p.m. at home on Elese Street
  • Police have not released information on person killed

Officers were called out to Elese Street near Deerock Drive just after 11 p.m. Saturday.

According to police, there was a gathering at a home on Elese Street. At some point during the evening, one person began firing at a car that was on the street in front the home.

That vehicle and one other were seen leaving the scene, according to investigators. Officers later found that vehicle, which had victim Dexter A. Rentz inside. They performed first aid and transported Rentz to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he later died.

Police said Sunday they do not believe the shooting was random, but they do not know who was targeted.

"Extremely important, any crime, especially violent crimes that affect the whole community, which is every violent crime, we rely on our media partners and our citizens with information," said Orlando Police Sergeant Joe Capece. "It's encouraged and anonymous."

Childhood friends of Rentz we spoke to were devastated by the news.

"I'm hurt. It's hard," said Katrell Mandez and Keymarion Turner, who said they used to play football with Rentz around the neighborhood. "We're tore up right now."

"He was a good person," Turner went on. "He made sure you had everything you need. I don't got no money in my pocket, he'll make sure you have a dollar to go get you something to drink."

A post from December 11th on Dexter Rentz's Twitter account invited people to attend his official signing with Louisville. (University of Louisville)

Rentz had signed a scholarship with the University of Louisville.

The school's athletic department released a statement Sunday morning:

“We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Dexter Rentz. He was a great young man who had a contagious personality, and was able to light up a room with his smile. He was a great kid to be around and he will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Rentz family during this extremely difficult time.”

The other three gunshot victims are expected to survive. One is listed in serious condition, while the other two reportedly have non-life-threatening injuries.

Anyone who might have information about the incident is asked to call CRIMELINE at 1-800-423-TIPS.
