Since a judge in northern Florida ruled Friday that the state cannot stop schools from issuing mask mandates, the school boards of some Central Florida districts have scheduled meetings to discuss their mask policies.

On Monday, the Brevard County School Board approved a 30-day mandatory mask order.

The order, which takes effect immediately, does not allow anyone to opt out from wearing a face covering without a doctor's note.

The order applies to students, faculty, staff, visitors, vendors, and everyone else while indoors on district property, and on buses.

Even before Friday’s ruling, the Volusia County School Board had scheduled a meeting for 6 p.m. Tuesday to discuss its mask policy.

Four of five members of the Volusia County School Board expressed support for a universal masking policy for students on Aug. 24. The dissenter — Jamie M. Haynes — supports a parental opt-out policy.

The existing policy in Volusia County makes masks optional for students, but adults must wear them.

Seminole County will hold its own mask policy meeting on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. in Sanford.

While they did not specifically mention masks, Lake County School Board will also meet Thursday at 9:30 a.m. "to review COVID-19 data from each public school and to discuss additional steps that could be taken to mitigate the spread of the virus."
