OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — A new COVID-19 testing site at the Maingate complex in Osceola County will offer another option for families looking to get either a rapid antigen or PCR test.

Cases are slightly down from earlier this month, but the seven-day average for number of deaths is up.

Osceola County’s percent positivity rate for cases remains one of the highest in the state, currently sitting at about 35.14%.

That’s right on par with Orange County, where the percentage is 36.4%.

But according to Spectrum News partner the Orlando Sentinel, the seven-day average for the number of deaths in Florida is the highest it’s been since before Thanksgiving. That average is now at 92, after 642 new COVID-19 deaths were reported over the past week.

During this time, experts continue to urge people to upgrade their face mask inventory, saying surgical masks and cloth masks are no longer cutting it.

"What most folks don't realize is that the amount of virus that you're initially exposed to directly correlates to how sick you get. So it's better to have something there than nothing because it actually decreases the severity of your illness, but also your transmissibility to other folks," cardiologist Dr. Bernard Ashby said.

As the demand for testing remains high, more options are becoming available.

At the federal level, there is a new website to order free at-home tests.
