The tax-relief package, approved by the Florida Legislature during its session, also includes a new relief package that would make diapers, clothes and shoes for babies and toddlers tax-free for a year.

It also will make children’s books tax-free for three months, starting May 14.

DeSantis also announced that the 14-day back-to-school tax-free holiday will run July 25-Aug. 7.

“We’re proud that we don’t have an income tax, but if you had an income tax, you just cut the tax rates, so you gotta figure out ways in Florida, what can you do for tax relief?” DeSantis said. “Given, thankfully, that we have no income tax, how do you do it to make a difference?”

In all, DeSantis said the tax-relief package is worth $1.2 billion.

Florida Agriculture Secretary Nikki Fried, who is the only Democrat in the state’s Cabinet and also is running for governor this year, released a statement, saying the tax- relief package was made possible by the federally passed American Rescue Plan.

"Working Floridians would not be able to access these benefits without the hard work of President (Joe) Biden and (congressional) Democrats who wrote and passed this historic legislation into law,” Fried’s statement said.

“This tax package contains important provisions like a tax exemption for energy-efficient appliances that my office worked to include and an exemption for diapers that Florida Democrats fought for."

Some of the tax relief in the package, such as the back-to-school holiday, has been offered in the past by Florida.
