Windstream declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy Monday following an unfavorable court ruling earlier this month.

The Arkansas-based company, which has offices in Rochester, says the decision will allow it to address the debt related to that decision.

On February 15, 2019, a federal judge ruled that Windstream defaulted on bonds by spinning off some assets into a subsidiary. It left the company on the hook for hundreds of millions of dollars in debt.

Windstream says it has secured $1 billion in financing to continue operating as the process plays out.

A spokesperson for the company said in a statement:

"With approval from the court, we will continue paying our employees, maintaining our relationships with our vendors and business partners and serving our customers as usual."

Windstream employs about 700 people in Rochester and just over 1,000 in New York.
