Monroe County opened up a handful of new rapid testing sites this week ahead of Thanksgiving.

The location at the former Stein Mart in Pittsford Plaza saw a steady flow of people Wednesday. The tests are free and were available in hopes of preventing a surge in post-holiday cases.

One woman drove out from Canandaigua and signed up her whole family to get a test.

"It's just because we're going to be with family and closer gatherings," Lisa Ashe said of why she made the trip for the test. "Anyone can carry COVID, vaccinated or not. I just want to make sure everyone is safe."

"The pandemic is still a thing, so everyone has to be safe regardless if they're vaccinated or not," Ethan Ashe added, "just to keep their loved ones safe and everything like that.”

Officials say roughly 1,500 people were tested at those sites, as well as other rapid testing sites across the county.

More than 60 of those tests came back positive.
