Police say a total of 30 people were arrested following a protest in downtown Rochester Wednesday night.

Demonstrators began to gather at Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park around 10:45 p.m. before marching to the corner of East Avenue and Alexander Street and then back to the park.

They were protesting Mayor Lovely Warren and the Rochester Police after an emergency order was issued banning large gatherings between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Mayor Warren and RPD Chief La'Ron Singletary say the order is an attempt to curb the recent surge in violence in the city. But organizers of the protest say the curfew is another attempt by the administration to criminalize Black and brown communities.

Police say demonstrators were given multiple orders to disperse over a period of hours. Officers began making arrests around 2 a.m.

According to the department, no force was used and no one was injured. Those arrested were issued appearance tickets.
