BROCKPORT, N.Y. — Two people are hurt following a Brockport apartment fire early Wednesday morning. At least a dozen apartments were destroyed and about 41 tenants are displaced.

The call came in around 5:40 a.m. for the three-alarm fire at the Viking Apartment Complex off of Route 31, next to Wegmans.

When crews arrived, flames could be seen shooting high into the air.

Some who escaped the fire told Spectrum News that they did not hear alarms go off and were instead evacuated by firefighters going door-to-door.

One woman described what was going through her mind as she got out of her apartment.

"We saw the fire above this building there and the smoke was filling the air so at that point we didn't know if it had already gotten over to our building yet. So like I said, just grabbed our laptops, our wallets, and got out with the dog, and that's when we saw that the whole back building... I mean it was so high in the air it was unbelievable," said tenant Olivia Garror.

"There were no alarms. Nothing, and the manager is trying to tell us there were alarms, but there was nothing. All I heard were people screaming and crying and that was it," Judy Thompson of Brockport said.

Fire crews used a ladder to rescue one person from her balcony. Several pets were also saved from the fire. The fire was contained to one building in the complex.

"I just want to get back in and take care of my cat. I don't care about nothing else. It's my cat. I had her since I moved in here and I don't know, it's a little scary. I'm glad there's no snow on the ground cause I'd be kinda froze," Terry Bailey of Brockport said.

Two people were taken to the hospital by ambulance but there is no official word on their injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
