ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A Rochester-area assemblyman posted a video of his own arrest on social media Friday night as he watched people gather to protest the eviction of a Rochester woman from a home in the Corn Hill neighborhood.

This is the video posted by Assemblyman Demond Meeks who represents the 137th district.

In the video you can see Rochester Police approach the 137th district representative.

They tell him he is under arrest and order him not to resist.

There were protests on Glasgow Street all evening over the eviction of a Rochester woman.

Democratic lawmakers put out a release immediately after Assemblyman Meeks' video of his own arrest went live, condemning the arrest and calling for a statewide eviction moratorium.

Spectrum News spoke with a protester who had just been released from police custody, who says though the eviction is legal, it just should not be happening

"I really hope she doesn't live on the street tonight. I really hope that she's able to find a place to live for her kids and her dogs. And I hope that she will be able to heal from the trauma that this has caused," said Graham Hughes, Rochester Housing Justice Alliance organizer.

"We did everything we could to try to assist the individual at the home, but obviously the court order required us to make an arrest," said Rochester Police Executive Deputy Chief Andre Anderson

The executive deputy chief says more than a dozen people were arrested for obstruction, given appearance tickets and released.

He says police tried to mediate between the tenant and the landlord, and offered the tenant shelter.

Mayor Lovely Warren is urging courts to drop charges, saying in a statement, “It’s the holidays. People are suffering from under the dark shadow of the pandemic and economic crisis. The last thing the courts should be doing is putting people out in the cold. I urge the federal and state governments to provide rent relief and mortgage assistance for responsible landlords."
