ROCHESTER, N.Y. — St. Stanislaus Church is sharing the Polish traditions of delicious food and blessings with $10 polish plates Saturday 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at a make-shift drive-thru set up at the church at the corner of Norton Street and Hudson Avenue in Rochester.

The church kitchen is busy mixing, rolling, stuffing, baking, and frying the flavors of Poland to share with Rochester.

What You Need To Know

  • St. Stanislaus is selling $10 polish plates Saturday 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

  • Plates will have galumpki, sausage, pierogies, sauerkraut, sauce, butter, onions and sour cream

  • There is a limit of 300 dinners available at 909 Norton Street in Rochester

  • It is $10 per plate, and payment is cash or check only

"We will have one galumpki, a fresh sausage, two potato pierogies, a nice big dollop of sauerkraut, sauce, butter, onions, and a sour cream packet to go with it," said Anna Bachner from St. Stanislaus.

St. Stanislaus matriarch Ludwika Kardela learned how to cook with her father after her mom passed away when she was seven years old. She moved from Poland to Rochester in 1963 and still hand twists the chrusciki or angel wings.

“My thanks to God I still work here. All the time this is my production that I bring from the old old country this recipe," said Kardela.

St. Stanislaus hopes to sell 300 polish dinners this weekend. That's nothing compared to the 13,000 pierogies alone they'd typically sell at the Polish Festival that was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns. They're grateful for even a little slice of Poland in Rochester.

“It signifies that we are still trying to do something in our culture and food seems to be a job for no matter who we are," said Bachner.

They are limiting Polish plate sales to 300 this weekend to see how it goes. If all goes well they plan to host another Polish plate drive-thru next month.
