SAN ANTONIO - If you want to help local pets waiting forever homes, but adoption and fostering isn't in the cards right now, there's a new way to get out and about with a furry friend with the new Staycation program from San Antonio Pets Alive.

Sometimes it's tough to just walk past the puppy dog eyes and fluffy faces. You can't adopt them all, but now there's a way you can still get to know them.

After filing out an application with San Antonio Pets Alive, one-day foster parents have the chance to let an adoptable dog enjoy life outside of the shelter.

"The dog gets out, gets a break from the kennels and that's been scientifically proven to reduce stress on them," said Clare Callison, director of operations with SAPA.

For dog lovers, it's just like having a pet for a day.

"They can do anything. They can go to the park, they can go hiking, they can go out to lunch," Callison said.

In the video above, reporter Alese Underwood tested out the SAPA program by hanging out with Cody, a lab-mix.
