SAN ANTONIO - Volunteers with the South-Central Texas chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society are raising hope on the runway.

"It gives them the power to continue to fight and love what they look like," said survivor Amanda Ramirez.

It's a walk down a runway that's given people like Ramirez hope.

"I was a little nervous because I had to learn how to walk again and everything and having me go on the runway was going to be a huge obstacle for me especially in heels," Ramirez said.

This is the third year for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Models of Courage fashion show, and Amanda has been there for all of them.

Her journey started back in 2015 on a vacation to Mexico.

"During a nap right before we came back to San Antonio, I noticed some bleeding in my gums. Everybody who has been diagnosed with cancer has been in my situation where the doctor comes in and tells you bluntly. You don't know what do or what to say. You're just stunned. I feel like the more you know about it, the better," she said.

That's why she's so passionate about the show.

"All of our models are leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma survivors or are currently in treatment," Models of Courage organizer Angie Lozano said.

Along with raising a lot of awareness, something else that's interesting about this fashion show is that it's put on exclusively by volunteers.

Both men and women walk in the show and range in ages from 4 to 60. Last year more than 200 people came and $40,000 was raised for clinical trials, programs and co-pays.

"All this money does go towards that as well as research to find a cure," Lozano said.

"Last year was a phenomenal year for LLS. There were 13 FDA-approved drugs and therapies that LLS was funding," said Sabrina Scott with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Amanda is now cancer free and ready to take center stage.

"The second time my hair my hair was just barely there. I had extensions. This time it's all my hair so maybe next time I'll be like Rapunzel. We'll see," Ramirez said.

High heels and all.
