SAN ANTONIO -- Some San Antonio high school students are getting some hands-on training that will be valuable in their post-education careers.

CPS Energy takes half a dozen students on as interns to teach them skills for trade jobs in the future.

This afternoon they spent time with lineman learning how to handle equipment, apply safety, and anything else they need to get up on the power poles. For some kids this is a first-hand look at what the real world looks like after high school.

"If we can introduce them to careers where you don't need a college degree, you'll receive training from the company. We want to provide those opportunities for them,” said Cristina Duarte, CPS Energy manager of education and mentoring programs.

CPS leaders said these students can take their skills into positions with them, or wherever else their job search might take them.
