TEXAS -- The U.S. Senate matchup between Republican incumbent Ted Cruz and Democratic challenger Beto O'Rourke is headed to the big screen.

"Run Like the Devil" covers the campaigns of both candidates. The soon-to-be-released documentary is directed by award-winning Texas documentarian and University of Texas film lecturer Steve Mims.

Mims embedded himself in the race as soon as O'Rourke announced his candidacy. He said the film is more a take on the runners and not the race.

“I think that what I learned is that you have two people. They're almost the same age. They both went to Ivy League schools. They're both brilliant and yet they turned out totally opposite,” Mims said. “They're iconically the opposite world view of what government should be.”

Mims said he wanted to make an objective film about both candidates and give the audience the chance to comprehend where they’re coming from.

“I've had people that say there's too much Ted Cruz in the movie,” Mims said. “In fairness, the only reason this is a movie, a story, a race is because Beto came from nothing into a real contender, and so that's part of the story, too. But that's what makes it interesting.”

The documentary premieres Sept. 6 in Austin, well before voters head to the polls in November.

“I don't know if it will make any difference, but I think that it might help people understand and I think that's beneficial to everybody regardless of who gets in,” Mims said.
