SAN ANTONIO -- San Antonio’s newest resale instrument shop is owned and operated by a former television industry executive who traded in new suits for used instruments.

  • Buys instruments and cuts a check for the seller
  • Plays for a band that forwards profits to children's charities

“Reuse, Recycle and Rock” is the motto behind Matt Orenstein’s Music Go Round, located on Blanco Road just north of Loop 410.

Orenstein spent two decades as a HBO marketing & sales executive before switching gears to pursue his passion for music. The doors opened on his new venture three months ago.

“It’s a very simple model. We buy from the public. Then we turn around and sell it,” Orenstein said.

Music Go Round is a national franchise with around three dozen stores peppered across the nation. The successfully proven business model specializes in buying and selling quality music gear. Musicians struggling to pay the bills can find themselves selling an instrument. The resale instrument store cuts the seller a check on the spot if the gear is in good shape.

“We provide a service to the public cause they can sell it to us. ‘No must. No fuss.’  We give them a check right on the spot. And we build great relationships with them. So they are constantly bringing us gear. We have the pipeline of product. At the end of the day they are also the same people who come back and buy it,” Orenstein said.

Orenstein also is a musician who plays with the local band SquareFish. Band earnings go the Alamo Kiawanas who donate money to local children’s charities.

Music Go Round is open seven days a week.
