TEXAS — The winter storm and its accompanying frigid air turned into a disaster Sunday night into Monday morning. On Monday afternoon, the office of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott reported the governor has deployed the National Guard and other resources to aid in storm efforts as millions continue to deal with power outages. Specifically, a news release state, the Guard will be aiding officials in transferring elderly Texans to safe locations.

Other resources will be used to restore power to the Texas communities that lost it. Some Texans, as of Monday afternoon, had been without power for more than 12 hours. The National Guard will help to conduct welfare checks and take those Texans who need require help to the 135 warming centers spread throughout the state.

The following resources have been deployed:

  • Texas Department of Public Safety: 3,300 troopers and 3,300 patrol vehicles responding to statewide weather events.
  • Texas Military Department: Six Winter Weather Packages consisting of 90 personnel, 28 High Mobility Multi-Wheeled Vehicles, one Field Light Ambulance, and one Wrecker.
  • Texas Parks and Wildlife Department: 585 personnel, 531 4x4 vehicles, 50 UAS, one aircraft and nine K-9 teams.
  • Texas A&M Forest Service: 83 personnel, six Motor Graders, and 58 4x4s.
  • Texas Department of Transportation: 2,314 personnel, 695 snowplows, 188 loaders, 55 Motor Graders, and 757 4x4 vehicles.
  • Texas Emergency Medical Task Force: one AMBUS and one Ambulance Strike Team; four Severe Weather Packages consisting of one Task Force leader, one MIST, one AMBUS and one Ambulance Strike Team, both of which are on standby.

Gov. Abbott previously issued a disaster declaration in all 254 Texas counties.
