BLANCO COUNTY, Texas — Pedernales Falls State Park is temporarily closed due to the threat of fire from Smoke Rider Fire.

According to Texas A&M Forest Service, as of 9 p.m. on Tuesday, the fire burning through Hays County is raging at 800 acres and is only 30% contained.

Highway 290 and roads leading to the state park were covered with ash and smoke Tuesday evening. Evacuations were being made south of the park.

Pedernales is a 5,212-acre park located along the banks of the Pedernales River in Blanco County and about 30 miles west of Austin.

Park officials earlier warned potential visitors that dry and hot conditions have reduced water levels in swimming areas to ankle level and that the heat is making rock and sand dangerous to walk on for people and animals.
