EL PASO, Texas — A car was submerged in a sinkhole Tuesday morning, hemming up traffic. According to El Paso NBC television affiliate KTSM, El Paso Water reported that the sinkhole was caused by a water main break.

Officials said the sinkhole was about 9 feet wide and 6 to 8 feet deep at the intersection of Deer Avenue and Dyer Street.

El Paso Water crews responded to the incident a little after 7 a.m.

A driver mistook a pair of cones for a lane instead of a blockage, but upon inching forward, the car’s front end began to sink. Water crews, police and bystanders pulled a woman from the car before it fully went under. Video of the rescue went viral on social media.

According to KTSM, El Paso Water explained that with the bursting of the water main, its pressure pushed debris from under the pavement, causing a crack and opening up a pocket of space.

Officials have warned people to keep away from the area, but to remain cautious if you need to drive through.

KTSM said crews are still working the scene. Fortunately, services were not interrupted, but that could change during repairs.
