Staten Islanders are getting tips on fire prevention.

The American Red Cross installed free smoke alarms in more than 60 homes on the North Shore Saturday. Congressman Dan Donovan helped install some of the smoke alarms.

It was all part of a home fire campaign on emergency preparedness and fire safety.

The program tries to help areas that are at high risk for fires.

Organizers say residents should make sure smoke alarms are functioning at least once a month. They also encourage residents to avoid putting space heaters near furniture or close to walls.

"Our main job as red cross disaster relief is to help families after a fire. But we want to be a part of the solution to see fires go down," said Rosie Taravella, Interim Regional CEO, American Red Cross of Greater New York.

Next month, The American Red Cross will be installing more smoke alarms on Staten Island and in Brooklyn as part of its Sound the Alarm campaign.
