TAMPA, Fla. — A Tampa Police Officer is recovering after being injured during a burglary investigation early Monday morning. 

  • Officer was struck by a pair of pliers
  • She is expected to be OK
  • The suspected burglar has been caught, police say

Officer Delaney Troop, 23, responded to an "Alarm call" at an Advance Auto Parts store on 1717 North 50th Street at around 1:40 a.m., according to a news release.  Police said the suspect, identified as Leonard Henry, was pouring anitfreeze on the computers when he tripped the alarm.

When Officer Troop arrived at the scene, Henry spotted her through the glass doors and threw a large pair of channel lock pliers through the front door with enough force to shatter the glass and strike Troop in the face. 

At that point, Troop called for back-up and kept the doors covered so Henry could not escape. 

At Tampa K9 officer arrived and found the suspect hiding at the top of a storage shelf in the warehouse area.  Henry was taken into custody and charged with aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, burglary, possession of a controlled substance, and criminal mischief. 

Troop was taken to Tampa General Hospital where she received eight stitches over her left eye. 

The investigation is ongoing.
