It happened at a house on 20th Avenue North. St. Petersburg Police Department officials said they received the call shortly after 3 a.m.

Jill Kiley called the St. Petersburg Police Department to say that her 31-year-old son Cody Kiley was threatening her with a gun, according to officials during a press conference on Monday morning.

At some point, Jill Kiley took her 4-year-old granddaughter — who is Cody Kiley’s daughter — and retreated to a back bedroom, authorities explained.

Four minutes after the phone call, police arrived at the home and found Cody Kiley in the backyard.

K9 officer Stephen York and K9 Loki engaged Cody Kiley, who did not drop his handgun, stated officials.

While York pulled Loki off of Cody Kiley, he was allegedly still threatening with a gun and would not drop the firearm, officials stated.

York then fired an unknown number of shots into Cody Kiley, who died, authorities stated, who added that both the officer and Loki are fine.

York has been with the St. Petersburg Police Department for a little more than five years.

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office will handle the investigation and the St. Petersburg Police Department will take over once the criminal portion is completed, stated authorities.
