TAMPA, Fla. — The Henry B. Plant Museum is opening its doors after dark for its "Eerie Evenings" October 25 and 26, featuring stories and customs of the people who stayed at the one-time hotel more than a century ago.

Here's five things to know about the annual Halloween-time event:

  1. The Henry B. Plant Museum sits nestled inside Plant Hall at the University of Tampa. The college building itself was once the Tampa Bay Hotel, and the museum is painstakingly maintained in the fashion of the hotel’s heyday: the Victorian Era.
  2. Costumed staff members share stories of those who died in the hotel, including one couple who together took their lives in their room with poison. They also describe strange occurrences within the museum, including unexplained noises and events.
  3. Victorian mourning customs are in full effect throughout the museum. Mirrors are covered in black cloth and clocks are stopped.
  4. Ouija boards are laid out as part of the event decor, as they were en vogue at the turn of the 20th century. You’ll see hair wreaths — because photos were so rare, people used locks of hair to remember their loved ones and sometimes wove them into intricate wreaths.
  5. The event goes from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. both evenings. Tickets are $25. Space is limited and reservations are strongly encouraged for this popular event.
