Crews are still cleaning up the mess after Monday's train derailment outside Lakeland.

CSX officials had hoped to have the area of the crash, Kathleen Road near Galloway Road, reopened by early Tuesday but the clean up process is still ongoing. Kathleen Road remains closed between Spivey Road south to Galloway Road.

The nine derailed cars have been removed from the track.

Early Monday, a train carrying hazardous material derailed, forcing the road closures. Molten sulphur spilled, along with cooking oil, after several train cars jumped the tracks.

For several hours Monday morning, residents in the area were advised to keep their windows closed. Shortly before 9 a.m. Monday, that request was lifted.

There were no injuries after the train cars jumped off the tracks and crashed, authorities said.

CSX officials said no local waterways were impacted and specialists are working to remove the sulphur and cooking oil from the soil. But there is no way yet to tell how long that will take.
