TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. — Crews are working to secure a hole that opened up on the campus of Tarpon Springs High School Friday.

  • Possible "sinkhole" on Tarpon Springs High campus
  • Hole is in front of culinary arts building
  • School notified police of hole Friday morning; no students dismissed

School officials notified the Tarpon Springs Police Department of a "possible sinkhole" near the culinary arts building Friday morning.

Students and staff are being restricted from the area while ground penetrating radar testing is done and the hole is filled with dirt.

The district said those results are expected Monday.

"We're going to be doing many more tests to make sure that the area is stable and safe and secure before we open this area of campus back up to students and the results of those tests should inform us about why the hole appeared," Lisa Wolf-Chason with Pinellas County Schools said.

The hole was discovered near a retention pond on the campus.  Officials say the hole is approximately 20 feet long and 12 feet deep.

School District Civil Engineer and City of Tarpon Springs Staff were on scene Friday assessing the situation.

Parents were notified of the situation and school will continue as normal for the last two weeks of school.
