  • Deputies investigating murder of McQueen's girlfriend at her Brandon apartment
  • Investigation ongoing

Deputies took John James McQueen into custody Monday night and he is being held without bail at the Hillsborough County Jail. He has been charged with first-degree murder.

McQueen had an ongoing domestic violence case against him and was on probation for beating up his girlfriend, who was the victim in this murder.

Authorities were first notified of a possible homicide around noon Tuesday at the Charleston Landing Apartments following the domestic violence incident involving the victim.

The identity of the 25-year-old woman, a mother of four, including a 3-month-old with McQueen, has not been released. She was found dead inside the apartment.

Tampa Police initially tracked down McQueen, who deputies later said is cooperating with the investigation.

Sheriff Chad Chronister said the murder should be a wake up call to all domestic violence victims.

"You do not have to live another second in some type of dysfunctional household where you have to feel like you are a victim of any type of violence," Chronister said. "Please family violence can be prevented."
