BROOKSVILLE, Fla. — The Brooksville Main Street Program is creating a “mermaid trail” to bring more people into the city.

“It doesn’t just get you walking — it also gets you looking at the architecture and other cool stuff you might never have noticed,” said Natalie Kahler, Executive Director of the Brooksville Main Street Program.
There will be small mermaid statues scattered all throughout downtown as part of the main street program’s new Florida Mermaid Trail, named for the famous mermaids in Weeki Wachee.
It’s all based on similar trails in other cities throughout the country.
“We thought it would be a good way to tie this part of the county in with the other side," Kahler explained. "Eventually, we would love for the trail to go all the way through Weeki Wachee."
Visitors can follow a map created by a local artist to find all the different mermaid statues or they can follow along on the Distrix app to find out more on each specific mermaid.
“We just want people to be noticing the businesses and then hopefully noticing a business they haven’t been in or haven’t been in for a while and going in and shopping in Brooksville,” Kahler said.
They’re hoping to have the entire trail ready to go by the end of January.
The Lowman Family Foundation covered the cost of purchasing each of these mermaids along the trail.
