TAMPA, Fla. — The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal home invasion involving four teenagers.

  • Deputies investigating home invasion at apartments in Citrus Park area of Tampa
  • 4 teens suspected, 2 shot, 1 was killed
  • Residents fired shots at 2 teens in apartment

Two of the teens were shot and one died.

The shooting happened Saturday evening at the Citrus Falls Circle apartment complex near Sheldon Road in the Citrus Park area of Hillsborough County. Deputies responded to the gated apartment complex around 7:30 p.m.

Few details have been released but deputies said four teens, who all are students at Gaither High School, targeted a couple in one of the apartments. The teen suspects are ages 16 and 17.

Authorities said two teenagers kicked in a screened-in area of their back patio and got into the apartment through an unlocked door. Once inside, the teens, one of whom was armed with a gun, made demands to the residents, officials said.

Deputies said a man inside defended himself with his own gun, shooting them both. The teens were transported to St Joseph's Hospital where one was pronounced dead and the other is in critical condition.

The apartment residents were not injured.

Deputies said they do not believe it was a random act. Also, deputies stopped a suspicious car with two other teens inside and said they were connected to the home invasion.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing and charges are forthcoming.
