  • Pinellas deputy shoots, kills man authorities say pointed weapon at deputy
  • 1 suspect dead, another suspect in custody
  • Shooting happened late Thursday on 36th Street South

No deputies were injured.

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, the shooting happened in the 2200 block of 36th Street South.

Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said the incident started around 9 p.m. when a Clearwater police officer spotted a black Lexus sedan driving erratically.

That Clearwater police officer tried to complete a traffic stop and the vehicle took off.

A few minutes later a Largo police officer saw the same car at US-19 and Whitney Road and tried to complete a traffic stop - the vehicle fled again.

Neither police officer pursued the car but they did run a check on the license plate, which led deputies to the location where the shooting happened.

Deputies set up surveillance near the house and set up a perimeter. Deputy Richard Curry, who was a part of the surveillance, spoke to a person who exited the home.

Gualtieri said that person had exited the home, walked up to Dep Curry's unmarked car and looked into the windshield and then came to the drivers side.

Dep. Curry lowered the window and the person said "oh you're the police" and walked away, officials said.

Moments later, two men returned pointing weapons at Curry, the sheriff said. Officials also said the two men fired shots at Curry.

Curry exited his car and fired his weapon.

Marquis Golden, 29, was shot and died at the scene. The second suspect, Delvin Ford, 22, ran but a K-9 unit tracked him to a nearby home where he was found on the roof.

Marquis Golden was shot and killed late Thursday by a Pinellas County deputy. Authorities said Golden and another man pointed weapons at the deputy. According to arrest reports, Golden's record includes 32 felony charges. (Pinellas County Jail)

Helicopter saw him on the roof with a handgun. He was taken into custody. Golden had 32 prior felony arrests. Ford has nine felony arrests.

An AR-15 and a handgun were found at the scene. Another handgun was found on the roof.

"It sounds lke they were definitly preparing to shoot and kill Deputy Curry," Gualtieri said. "They knew he was a law-enforcement officer , the one person verbalized that and said he was the police."

"(Curry) was a sitting duck. They were going to execute him," the sheriff said at an afternoon news conference.
