ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The long-awaited debut of the new St. Pete Pier finally has a grand opening date. 

But it will be a quiet debut.

St. Petersburg city officials announced Friday the new pier will open to the public on Monday, July 6. 

The 1970s-era inverted pyramid Pier was shuttered seven years ago. Since then, residents and lawmakers bickered over what to do with the aging structure. A decision was finally made to replace, not rebuild and eventually to create an entirely new 26-acre destination for people to enjoy. 

The new pier is being touted as an entire district that will be the ultimate place to stroll, bike, dine, drink, shop, swim and take in a concert. The pier was previously scheduled to open on May 30 but that was pushed back due to coronavirus concerns. 

Still, due to COVID-19, no organized mass gathering will coincide with the pier's opening. City officials said additional details related to a healthy and safe opening of the pier will be released soon.

"It's been a long and winding road," said Mayor Rick Kriseman. "But we've arrived at our destination: A dynamic, 26-acre waterfront playground that will serve residents and visitors for generations to come. It's time for everyone to experience all the Pier District and St. Pete Pier has to offer."
