It’s a new cause for two Parkland teens who are now using their voices for encourage social distancing measures in the face of COVID-19.

The last time we spoke 18-year-old Adam Buchwald, he and his friend Zach Hibsman were standing outside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in the weeks following the Parkland shooting.

At the time, the teens were spearheading a campaign called “A Parent’s Promise to Kids,” a contract adults signed promising to vote for lawmakers supporting common sense gun laws. 

Now, Buchwald is at it again, this time with his younger brother, 17-year-old Josh Buchwald. The brothers told Bay News 9 reporter Cait McVey their new goal is to encourage social distancing during the pandemic.

“I think it’s just Adam and I’s mentality. Just loving to help,” Josh said. “We’ve always been willing to help people no matter what the case is.”

This new campaign is called “Promise to Humanity.”  Those who sign the contract pledge to wear a mask, practice social distancing and follow safety measures, all in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. 

“I think it’s a personal choice,” Adam said. “But I don’t think this whole mask debate or social distancing guidelines should be debated at all. It’s just simple.  It’s a simple guideline.  It’s common sense.” 

At lest 6,000 people agree.  That’s how many signed contracts the teens have so far.  Not just from the Parkland area, but from across the state, country and even around the world.

"We’re hustling,” said Adam. “We’re hustling every day.”
