LAKELAND, Fla. — Two people were seriously injured Saturday after a plane crashed in the 4100 block of South Pipkin Road in Lakeland, police said.

The crash happened just before 2:30 p.m. in an industrial area near Lakeland Linder International Airport, the Lakeland Police Department said.

"The crash involved a single-engine plane with two adult occupants," the department said on its Facebook page. "Both occupants were airlifted for medical treatment with serious injuries."

No one on the ground was injured, officials said.

The crash will be investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board.

The names of the injured individuals were not immediately released.
