CITRUS COUNTY, Fla. — For many Citrus County residents, going to the grocery store can be pretty difficult so they rely on volunteers with Meals on Wheels to get food for the week.

For years, Clyde Lowe has needed help getting around. An accident with carbon monoxide left him an amputee, but he manages okay with his dog, “Baby,” by his side.

“I don’t know what I’d do if something happened to her cause I can never get another one,” Lowe said.

Lowe's had Baby for a couple of years, but he said sometimes having enough money to feed himself and the dog is a challenge.

Looking down at the yellow nose pitbull, he said, “I would give her my food before I would let her go hungry.”

Now thanks to people like Sally Greiner, Clyde doesn’t have to make that choice.

Greiner is a volunteer with the Citrus County Pet Meals program.

“It’s helped out quite a few people," Greiner said. "We use to have over 100 people on our routes and it fluctuates. It’s a nice service and we want to help the community.”

The program is similar to “Meals on Wheels” except, in this case, the clients are pets like Baby.

Greiner said, “A lot of people started donating through Chewy. They’ll just place a monthly order and have it sent directly to us which is just wonderful.”

Lowe called the program a “blessing."

Thanks to the Pet Meals program, Baby has plenty of food and Lowe said if Baby is happy, so is he.
