TAMPA, Fla. — There are plenty of jobs available in the medical and construction industries.

  • Goal is to introduce students to the medical and construction fields

  • The high schools are scheduled to open in the fall of 2023, and the medical technical college will open in the fall of 2024

The economic forecast shows those fields will be even more sought after in the next five to 10 years.

The Hillsborough County school district is looking to fill that gap with a new workforce development program.

Superintendent Addison Davis announced Wednesday a new workforce development program called Building Tampa's Tomorrow.

The district is adding two new high schools along with a technical college.

It is under-utilizing buildings like Bowers-Whitley, that's currently operating at 11 percent, to launch their new programs.

Kimberly Guy says she'd love to hire work ready students from the programs. She is the BayCare Health System’s senior vice president/market leader in Hillsborough.

“The idea of being able to grow kids from our community and put them right into this workforce, we have six hospitals from the Baycare health system right here in Hillsborough county, so we'll put them to work right away,” she said.

The high schools are scheduled to open in the fall of 2023, and the medical technical college will open in the fall of 2024.

Davis said any Hillsborough County student can apply for the program.

The district is also looking to add a distribution-logistics educational pathway in the future.
