DURHAM, N.C. -- Folks hit the ground running for a good cause Saturday as the Duke Cancer Institute hosted the "Angels Among Us" 5K to raise money for brain tumor research.

  • Funds go to Preston Tisch Brain Tumor Center
  • Raised more than $22 million since 1994
  • One of largest and oldest local running events

Funds from the event will go directly to the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke, which supports the recruitment of top scientists and brain cancer research.

"We've been trying to cure these brain tumors for decades," says David M. Ashley, Director of the Preston Robert Tisch Brian Tumor Center. "We're finally making some progress and most of the people here have some direct or indirect connections with patient or family that has suffered from this terrible illness so they come out to support us and to support our research."

The race is one of the largest and oldest local running events to benefit medical research.

Since it started in 1994, the event has raised more than $22 million.
