Sade Mims' pieces for her brand EDAS are more than just accessories.

"I grew up in an artist environment," she explained. "My father had me in art classes since I was a kid, and sculpting and drawing and all that. So I think that that was my first thing, so I create and design with that in mind."

The 29-year-old took part in New York Fashion Week. Her sustainably-made leather bags were on display at the Black in Fashion Council's showroom at Spring Studios.

The council works towards the advancement of Black people in the fashion community.

"Black creatives, Black people inspire the fashion industry so much and I don't think we often get that proper recognition," she said.

The impact of some Black creators is being felt; with major designers like Telfar Clemens and his highly in demand tote now known as the Brooklyn Birkin, Virgil Abloh, the artistic director of Louis Vuitton men's, or Christopher John Rogers, the winner of the CFDA's 2020 Emerging Designer of the Year award.

But for smaller brands like EDAS, it was the push to buy Black in summer of 2020, that really changed everything. Mims, who is based in Bedford-Stuyvesant, gained 10,000 followers on Instagram, and almost couldn't keep up with the demand.

"I was a little, one, grateful, but also, a little, a little frustrated that it took, that here I am, and it's been such a slow churn and I don't take any of it for granted but I have been wanting to be that person for so long and that it took this awakening of America," she said.

The historic moment a topic of discussion at a Black in Fashion Council town hall. On the panel included the mother-daughter duo behind House of Aama.

"I think we have to be really strategic about this particular moment in time. And I think that we have to use our time very very wisely and build out our business and build out our structures internally," Rebecca Henry said.

Mims said social media is a big part of her business plan.

"That means knowing who you're buying from, and knowing their message and their story. And I think that also means sharing it afterwards it's been purchased so don't keep that to yourself, share it."

As for the story of Sade Mims and her company EDAS, it's just beginning.
