It seems there is an ongoing battle between small businesses in NYC and the people they employ. Small business owners, like our guest, Eli Amsel, will tell you recently enacted laws, like those creating the $15 minimum wage and paid sick leave, are making it impossible for small businesses to survive. The city would say every worker has the right to earn a living wage and be treated more humanely in the workplace. Amsel joins us to talk about his Brooklyn business, Lagmitz Paper and Plastic, which he’s owned for 38 years. His primary business is making plastic shopping bags, which are also under assault. He’ll talk about how his business has changed since the minimum wage rose, and why the growing opposition for plastic shopping bags will probably put an end to Lagmitz. He makes an interesting point: everything you put in your plastic shopping bag is wrapped in plastic, so why is the bag the bad guy? Tom Grech is with the Queens Chamber of Commerce, and sees both sides of the argument: workers need better wages, but small businesses need to survive. He joins us to talk about what groups like his can do to help protect both.
