NEW YORK - Police are trying to find the attackers seen in dramatic cellphone video that shows a man being brutally attacked on a New York City subway train.

The video shows him getting repeatedly punched and kicked in the face.

It's unclear when the attack took place.

Sources tell NY1 police believe it happened on the D train near the 161st Street station.

"We reached out to patrol, we reached out to our transit officers in search of anyone who may have information. Clearly it was a very violent attack and that was our main concern, could there be someone behind a door somewhere," said NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea.

The MTA has since released a statement saying, "This kind of senseless violence belongs nowhere – we hope this young man recovers quickly and the full weight of the law is brought upon his attackers."

Anyone with information on the case should contact the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577- 8477, or text CRIMES and then enter TIP577, or visit www.nypdcrimestoppers.com.
