An investigation is underway by the Department of Correction after a transgender female inmate died in her cell on Rikers Island.

Sources tell NY1 27-year-old Layleen Polanco was discovered Friday unresponsive in a cell in the Rose M. Singer Center, a female housing unit at the jail. Medical staff attempted to revive her for one hour, but they were not successful.

The cause of death has not yet been determined, but according to preliminary reports there are no signs of foul play.

Polanco was arrested April 13th charged with assault and criminal possession of a controlled substance, both misdemeanor charges.

Advocates and friends of Polanco are planning legal action and have started a GoFundMe page to raise money for her family.

“This is a tragic loss and we extend our deepest condolences to her family. We are conducting a full investigation, as the safety and well-being of people in our custody is our top priority,” the Department of Correction said in a statement.
