QUEENS, N.Y. — Welcome to “Broadway at the Drive-In.” It’s a movie-meets-live-performance event created by producer Jeremy Shepard.
“’Broadway at the Drive-In’ is an experience all into itself,” Shepard told NY1. “We take a film version of theatrical play and we play that on the large screen. And then underneath it, we have our actors and singers and performers acting and singing to the theatrical numbers, as they come in sequence in the film.”
"Broadway at the Drive-In" was unveiled a few weeks ago with a filmed stage version of The Phantom of the Opera. Currently on the big screen is Prince's Purple Rain.
Plus, if you don’t have a car, Shepard said not to worry.
"There are 40 picnic tables that are closest to the stage. They're all properly socially distanced, where each one of those picnic tables is in a spot that is 16 feet by 12 feet," said the producer of the event.
A portion of the proceeds from each show will be donated to Friends of Halletts Point, a not-for-profit that helps the community living in and around the Halletts Point Peninsula.
"They provide what is needed. If it's coats or shoes or education," said Shepard.
