NEW YORK — At least six people were arrested in Washington Square Park overnight, the latest clash at the Greenwich Village gathering place.

According to the city police department, officers closed the park for its midnight curfew without incident, but what it described as a “group of agitators” began knocking over barriers at around 12:55 a.m., injuring an officer.

At least two people were arrested for assaulting officers, and at least three people were taken into custody for obstructing governmental administration, according to the NYPD.

Witnesses took to social media alleging that police attacked and brutally arrested revelers just outside of the park.

This comes amid a month of arrests at the park, after a 10 p.m. weekend curfew was implemented to control disruptive and rowdy behavior there. The 10 p.m. curfew was soon rescinded, leaving in place the midnight one.

Protesters, meanwhile, have over the past month alleged the NYPD has used aggressive tactics, to enforce the curfew. Videos posted to social media of one Washington Square Park protest showed instances of use of force that included people getting maced, tazed, tackled and hit with police bicycles and batons.
