NEW YORK — People headed to Vanderveer Park United Methodist Church in East Flatbush to pick up items for Thanksgiving. Charter Communications, NY1's parent company, donated $3,000 for the giveaway.

Those who attended picked up turkeys, produce and other groceries.

Organizers say events like these are important as people face food insecurity throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The pandemic has affected people's lives and their livelihoods. Providing any kind of help around food, around any kind of sustenance that they need — particularly as important as Thanksgiving is for our families — has really been a lifesaver for many communities," said Democratic State Sen. Kevin Parker of Brooklyn.

Charter's donation ensured more than 250 families were able to get essentials for Thanksgiving.
