AUSTIN, Texas -- After weeks of temperatures more than 100 degrees, dog owners are taking advantage of cooler temperatures after the rain.

Rain can ruin plans for people. For dogs in the middle of record-breaking summer temperatures, it could make their day.

After weeks of triple digits highs making it too hot for dogs, the recent rainy weather has cooled things off making it perfect for pups to play outside.

Michael Gunter took his puppy Wrigley to Vic Mathias Shores to enjoy a rare day outside after weeks of early morning walks.

"We have to come at like 6:00 or 6:30 in the morning, and then after work around 7:00 or 8:00 just when it's not so hot," Gunter said.

High temperatures could cause dogs to overheat quickly. Hot concrete can also burn paws. Jose Alverado knows first-hand how harmful the heat can be on his dog Mesa.

"With the heat it gets harder," Alverado said. "She gets tired and she'll definitely plop down."
