With Hurricane Florence expected to be one of the strongest storms to hit the Eastern seaboard in decades, evacuations have been underway and as the storm gets closer to the Carolinas, agencies in Western New York are ready to help in any way possible.

Organizations like the Humane Society of the United States connect shelters that will be impacted by natural disasters with ones out of the area that animals can be transported to. The SPCA Serving Erie County took in six dogs that came from a shelter in South Carolina.

"So usually in times like this, when we work with storm animals, the community really kind of bumps up their interest in adopting — dogs especially. We'll take cats too and they'll bump up their interests in adopting cats, this way they know that they're doing something to help victims of the storm, if they adopt an animal from us they're clearing up space for us to accept other ones," said Gina Browning, SPCA Serving Erie County chief communications officer.

For anyone who would like to help, the dogs will be up for adoption once they adjust and are assessed. Erie County SPCA notes they always put local animals first, but if they have the space and if necessary, they will take in more animals impacted by the storm.
