BUFFALO, N.Y. — A candidate for Buffalo mayor is calling for independent oversight within the Buffalo Police Department.

India Walton, a candidate with the Working Families Party, is responding to state Attorney General Letitia James recommendation of a civilian-run police review board.

Walton accuses Mayor Byron Brown of failing to change systemic issues within the police department.

She uses Martin Gugino, the man knocked to the ground by Buffalo police officers during a Black Lives Matters protest last year, as an example, saying those officers are still employed.

She says that shows a police review board is severely needed.

"Not people appointed by the mayor, but actual…who have power, who can recommend disciplinary action when it comes to police officers so we never have another Martin Gugino," Walton said.

In response, Mayor Brown says he is open to working with the community and listening to people in it, to continue his administration’s reform process in the city.
