CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y.  — The power outage at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson Airport lasted until just after midnight Monday but the ripples will be felt for days.

Just three flights from Buffalo to Atlanta were cancelled by the outage, cuased by a fire in an underground electrical facility. A fourth flight was diverted to Tennessee.

Alyssa Palacios started on her journey home to Atlanta at  1 p.m. Sunday. Palacios' rescheduled 6 a.m. flight was canceled as well. But after 22 hours at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport, she was on her way home at 11:09 a.m. Monday when the first flight  to Atlanta departed.

For Chase Daniels and Tommy Vertino the delay was really OK.

"It's awesome, no school," Daniels smiled.

The boys were on the trip with their dads to watch the Bills- Dolphins game. Before they even left the stadium their 7 p.m. fight was canceled.

For those travelers flying in from Atlanta, it was not an exciting adventure.

Rasi Wala and Ben Carlisle were connecting through Atlanta to get to Buffalo from the Bahamas.

After waiting on the tarmac for five hours after landing in Atlanta, they were told to go to the domestic terminal. After waiting 90 minutes there, they waited another 90 minutes for a taxi to a hotel, which ended up being fully booked.

"Then at about midnight we made it to the Westin, went to bed and then got up at 5 a.m. to get back to the airport," Carlisle said.

Aviation experts say the timing of this outage, right before Christmas, makes things worse, given that there are fewer open seats on flights. It could take most of this week for stranded passengers to make it to their destinations.
