It’s an uncertain time amid the pandemic, and not just for those with two legs.

Kayla McNeil is a Saratoga native who has been taking advantage of being home with her 1 year old labradoodle, Winston. Veterinarians say it’s important to exercise with your pet while being home. But with all those extra walks, Winston was in need of some care.

“We were taking him for more walks, a run in the woods, and he hurt his hip,” said McNeil.

Dr. Pamela Reppert of Saratoga Springs Veterinary Hospital is making it a bit more comforting for pet parents, as so many vets’ offices are closed due to COVID-19.

“There’s nothing worse than someone sitting at home worried about their pet,” said Reppert, “So I tried to figure out a way to provide essential services without risking anyone’s health.”

Reppert came up with a fresh-air examination room to allow social distancing within the office. The room is set up on the hospital’s front lawn. The entire examination is done right outside, rain or shine.

The entire check-in process and payments are taken right in the parking lot, allowing Winston’s mom to stay in the the car throughout his entire check-up.

“Having this opportunity is huge for our community. Everyone is nervous about themselves, nervous about the dogs,” said McNeil.

“They can pull up and they can watch while animals are examined. For people, that’s a comfort,” added the doctor

Reppert says there is no evidence that animals can spread the virus, but even so, social distancing isn’t just for humans.

“You use the best precautions you can. Obviously, we encourage social distancing between animals; don’t go to the dog park,” she said.

The office is only taking important high-risk calls to limit their exposure to pets and people. She says it’s important pet owners speak with their animal’s vet to discuss available essential services.

She also adds pet parents should make a plan in case someone in the family is hospitalized.
