After more than 40 years on the job, Troy Police Chief John Tedesco is calling it a career.

Tedesco announced on Friday that he will retire in January of next year.

He started serving as chief in 2010. He served as active chief after the retirement of Chief Nicholas Kaiser.

Tedesco was known for helping to push community policing efforts.

Mayor Patrick Madden will now lead the effort for his replacement. He released a statement which read in part:

"Under his leadership, the Troy Police Department has continued to grow and modernize to confront the ever-changing challenges facing law enforcement agencies across our nation.

John held himself to the highest standards of excellence to meet the growing needs of our neighborhoods and community."

The Troy Police Department has 130 members.
