ALBANY, N.Y. -- Those traveling throughout Albany will have a new way to explore the city.

On Monday, preliminary plans were announced to build the Albany Skyway. The project would convert the Clinton Avenue exit on Route 787 to a new, elevated park. The goal is to create a way for pedestrians and cyclists to get to the waterfront.

Construction will start in the fall of 2019 and be completed by late 2020.

"We'll be completing the feasibility study with New York State over the next four to six months. With the announcement yesterday, we'll be rolling right into final design for the project and then construction right after," said Sarah Reginelli, president of Capitalize Albany Corporation.

Mayor Kathy Sheehan says the funding comes from state money set aside for transportation prospects.

Since the plans are preliminary, officials want input. "Capitalize Albany" is hosting a public meeting Thursday at the Albany Heritage Area Visitors Center.
